Mission |
The mission of The United States Vietnam Arts Program (USVAP) is to provide opportunities for artists from Vietnam and the United States to work collaboratively on artistic projects; to offer encouragement and support for the collaborative process particularly across cultural boundaries; to bring together new and existing audiences to discover or rediscover the cultural and artistic traditions of both countries. Additionally, to provide "artistic tools" to wounded service members from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Bringing visibility to the power of art and how it might bring cathartic inner solace for those Americans who have sacrificed in service to their country.

|
Statement of Purpose |
USVAP will develop opportunities for artists from Vietnam and the United States in a variety of disciplines to collaborate on creating, performing or exhibiting works to audiences. In addition, a primary goal of the program will be to educate audiences in both countries of the rich cultural traditions and experiences before, during and since the war. |

"When I left for Vietnam in 1970, the most significant item that represented who I was to this culture was my M16 rifle. Today, when I return to Vietnam, I bring not a weapon, but my music."
James Kimo Williams, composer and veteran on his return to Vietnam in 1998
